Course Outline:

  • Gain a deeper understanding of the transport network and its components.
  • Explain microwave links versus optical fiber.
  • Learn about transport network dimensioning.
  • Discuss a virtualization of the RAN, including the functional splits provided in 3GPP architecture.
  • Learn about the transport components key to improving connectivity between the core network, centralized unit, distributed unit, and radio unit.
  • Discuss fronthaul, midhaul, backhaul, and sidehaul (the interfaces described include the CPRI, eCPRI, NGFI, FAPI, nFAPI, F1, NG, S1, Xn, and E1).
  • Explain the challenges for 5G transport networks, including bandwidth and latency limitations.
  • Discuss the dimensioning of the transport components to ensure traffic loads do not adversely affect quality of service during different network conditions.
  • Learn about methodology for dimensioning for fronthaul, midhaul, and backhaul.
